Originally used for logging and rural cultivation, elephants now have become more traditional as a tourist attraction. An elephant's handler or master is actually linked to the animal for life and both depend on each other for their survival and income. Most elephants become part of an elephant camp whereby grouped elephants provide a variety of entertainment to tourists including artistic painting, playing soccer and basketball and also doing small treks into nearby hill sides. In the north of the Kingdom around Chiang Mai are some small hill tribe villages that also become a part of the elephant treks.
