We recommend traveling to Thailand with as least as possible. This way you will not have to pay the expensive extra baggage charges when returning home. Unless you are traveling to Thailand for business just take a couple of pairs of shoes, shirts, shorts, slacks and you will no doubt purchase many more of them when shopping at markets or high end stores. Laundry prices are dirt cheap so take advantage of them.

There are two types of places whereby you can shop to you drop. The cheapest is market based locations such as the Patpong Night Markets and the Chatuchak Weekend Markets in Bangkok. The second is air conditioned shopping centres where the bargains are not as cheap as markets but the shopping environment is much easier on the body.

If you are intending to purchase gems be sure to only purchase them from reputable companies that show the ISO 9001 certification. While walking the streets you will be approached by touts who will offer bargain based gems to purchase right then and there. On no occasion should you oblige as you will be very disappointed once you value the gems. If you intend to purchase Jade especially near the Thai - Burmese Border make sure you buy it again from certified companies as there are many grades of Jade with some grades only worth a few dollars.
