Only 700 kilometres north of Bangkok, flights to Chiang Mai are quick, taking just over one hour. Chiang Mai town centre is close to the airport, and with no city hustle bustle, you can be at your hotel in about 15 minutes. Small and quaint, Chiang Mai is renowned for its ancient traditions and culture. Take a step back in time and immerse yourself - trek through the mountains; ride an elephant; visit a hill-tribe; barter at the local markets; or say a prayer at one of the 300 temples.
If you have plenty of time, take your adventure further north and explore Chiang Mai's surrounding regions. Rural Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son are ideal for hill-tribe trekking, with the famous 'Long Neck Women' and their brass neck coils at the nearby Padong village. For breathtaking views of the Burma, Laos and Thailand borders, check out the Golden Triangle, which is renowned for its splendid mountain scenery.
Whether you are trekking across the mountains or trekking down the streets of the Night Bazaar, you'll soon realise that life is different in the Northern Kingdom. With Chiang Mai's slow relaxed pace, friendly locals, and unspoiled beauty, you will not want to go home. |
